A report in the LA Times last week explored why farmers in the Central Valley are having a hard time finding enough workers, despite reportedly paying up to 40 percent more than the California minimum wage. But farmworkers typically are not employed makke agriculture year-round. Many farm jobs are seasonal, nand few workers migrate between California farming regions—those who pick vegetables in southern California deserts between January and May rarely move to the San Joaquin Valley to pick fruit between July and September. Employers report employment and wages when they pay unemployment insurance taxes, and these data are published as the Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages QCEW. However, the QCEW grossly undercounts the number of agricultural employees and therefore overstates the pay per employee. The average employment measurement in the QCEW accounts for maie on the payroll for the payroll period that includes the 12th day of the month. Most farmworkers are paid weekly, so employment covers workers employed for the second week of the month. We assigned workers to the commodity or North American Industry Classification System NAICS code in which they had their maximum earnings, and found thathad their highest earnings in agriculture. Furthermore, most workers are brought to farms by crop support services companies or agents, such as farm labor contractors FLCs ysar, who usually pay lower-than-average wages.
In the words of Cesar Chavez :. They bring in so much food to feed you and me and the whole country and enough food to export to other places. Unfortunately, this paradox in our food system rings as true today as it did decades ago when Chavez spoke these words. The same farm workers who work hard to provide food to the country often struggle to make ends meet and provide food for themselves and their families. In fact, farm workers have the lowest annual family incomes of any U. Pie chart showing farm workers receive only 0. For example, workers who have worked for the same employer for multiple years earn more than other workers. First of all, if workers are being paid by how much they pick, this acts as a disincentive to take breaks for water or shade, as taking breaks would cut into their productivity and thus cut into their pay.
Education Requirements
For instance, the piece rate for orange juice in Florida is 85 cents per pound box of oranges. Average productivity for a worker is 8 boxes per hour, which means that during an 8-hour workday, a worker will produce 64 boxes of oranges or 5, pounds of oranges! Unfortunately, there are loopholes to this system. If a farm worker is hired through crew leaders or farm labor contractors, which approximately one half of all farm workers are, then their growers can avoid state and federal-level employment laws, including minimum wage. Unfortunately, oversight on this is lax. At the end of the day, a law is only as strong as its enforcement. Other factors besides low wages also contribute to farm worker poverty. Farm worker unemployment rates are double those of all wage and salary workers according to the NAWS, as agricultural work by nature provides virtually no job security.
Factors Affecting Compensation
Farmers are agricultural professionals who grow crops and take care of animals on farms they often own and maintain themselves. They mostly work with their hands but also use their business skills to find buyers for their farm’s products and obtain all necessary supplies for operations. This career can be a good fit if you do not mind physical labor and long hours, find it appealing to run your own farm and produce a mix of crops for sale in the marketplace. Your salary as a farmer depends on factors such as the crops you grow, market conditions and the size of your farm. Choosing self-employment gives you more freedom in choosing what crops or niche to specialize in to have better prospects for your location and target customers. Whether they have their own farms or work on other people’s farms, farmers are responsible for ensuring that crops get produced successfully, that any livestock are taken care of and that the farm’s equipment, facilities and supplies are maintained properly. Common tasks for farmers include planting and fertilizing crops, buying the supplies the farm needs to operate, repairing farm equipment like tractors, monitoring the soil, herding animals and harvesting the grown crops. Farm owners have additional duties to keep records, plan production and market their farms to clients who want to purchase their crops.
